Weekly Tech Tip - March 1, 2013

This week's tech tip comes from Free Technology For Teachers. I am a huge advocate of video in the classroom. One of the highlights of Free Technology For Teachers discussed the use of the BBC YouTube channel. So, I'm sending this link on. I've watched a few of these video clips and they are very intriguing. Give it a try!

Weekly Tech Tip - Feb. 13, 2012

It has been a while since I sent out a tech tip. This week's tech tip has nothing to do with websites, or cookies, or settings on your computer. This week's tech tip has to do with mobile apps. There are several mobile apps that we've come to use on a daily basis. However, we've also decided to develop an app for both ESU 4 and NCECBVI. Below are some screen shots. These are only screen shots and not the final product. The company we are working with is doing some revisions and we hope to have the apps available by the beginning of next month. The apps will be available for both Apple iOS and Google Android.

So, as you download them in a few weeks, we'd like your feedback. What do you like? What would you change? I can tell you that the app will reflect most of what is on our web pages. I've enjoyed having these discussions and think this is a great way to continue to provide timely communication with those we work with - students, teachers, and families.

Stay tuned, the apps are coming..
Enjoy, Gregg

Weekly Tech Tip - Jan. 22, 2013

This week's tip has to do with email. I know it has been discussed before. I just wanted to give a few more tips.

I have been getting lots of invites to join SkillPages as well as other folks across the ESU system. I believe this to be somewhat legitimate, but if you do not want to join, then please just delete the email. As I've read about Skillpages, it occurs that it automatically takes and populates emails for the person who joined.

So, if I choose to join SkillPages, it will take and populate an invite to all my contacts. Here is a short description of how SkillPages works - something I found while reading about SkillPages.

==========
SkillPages Invitation Emails
4th December 2012

The ICT Department has become aware of a number of unsolicited messages inviting colleagues to join the SkillPages network, similar to the example below:

The ICT Department has blocked delivery of these messages to University e-mail accounts, but messages may still be delivered to private e-mail accounts. A side effect of accepting the invitation is each of the contacts in your address book will subsequently receive a similar invitation purporting to have been sent by you. This is not an illegal act, as by initially accepting the invitation you are consenting to your contacts being used in this way. Should you receive such a message, our advice would be not to respond and  to delete the message.

=============

So, as the saying goes, if you suspect something inaccurate, then please delete the email. If you suspect that your account has been compromised, then please change your password. Your accounts (email, social networks, etc) are only as good as your usernames and passwords. Your passwords should contain uppercase and lowercase letters as well as special symbols, if allowed.

Until next week,
Gregg

As always if you have any questions, please let me know.

Thanks and wishing you all a wonderful 2013,

Weekly Tech Tip - Dec. 17, 2012

 This weekly tech tip comes from the NETA big deal book - a digital subscription that I get.

3DToad - A website that stores 3D images. Viewers can zoon in and out and rotate images 360 degrees. The galleries include images from history, geology, chemistry, skeltons, fossils, and much more.

Teaching Kids News - A news site that is written on level that students can comprehend. Each story also includes a ste of discussion questions, writing prompts, reading prompts, and vocab words.

Education Closet - Lessons for free that focus on arts integration, common core standards, 21st Century Learning Skills, and technology.

I hope you find these web sites useful.

I wish each and everyone of you a very Merry Christmas!

Until next year,
Gregg

Weekly Tech Tip - Dec. 10, 2012

Looking for music to calm students, enhance some movement, just some sing alongs, or some relaxing music at your desk. Well, then this tech tip is for you.

As I was reading one of my journals, "Learning and Leading with Technology", I came across an article that featured websites with free music. As with any website, you should take some time to sift through it and read the "About" section or find out more about why these sites are listed as "free music sites". You can also use this music with student projects, such as creating videos or using them in the background of a slideshow.

Please check them out - some great music for any age group

Another article that is worth mentioning was a website referring to student interactive storybook apps. These are great for an iPad, as we have lots of those going out within our service area.

Until next time,
Enjoy,
Gregg
